DIGITAL COLORING
I have digitally colored the work of other cartoonists since 2004. I do all my digital coloring with Adobe Photoshop at a Wacom Tablet. Check out some of the books I have colored below!
Digital coloring clients include: First Second Books, Scholastic, and Disney Hyperion.

PLAIN JANE AND THE MERMAID BY VERA BROSGOL
This was the second book I colored for Vera Brosgol. For Vera’s book Be Prepared (see below), we used a limited palette of only four colors. For this book I helped Vera build a full color palette which we really put through its paces over the 352 pages of this story, which takes place on land and above and below the sea. There were a few extra pages at the end of the book so the editors kindly included a two-page spread about the coloring process! Published by FirstSecond Books in 2024.
MR. WOLF'S CLASS (SERIES) BY ARON NELS STEINKE
I colored Mr. Wolf’s Class: Field Trip (2020) and Mr. Wolf’s Class: Snow Day (2022), the fourth and fifth book in this series by my old comics pal Aron Nels Steinke. One of the big goals was to match the coloring style that Aron had established in the first three books, so that readers would not feel a big change in style as they read through the series. Published by Scholastic.
BE PREPARED BY VERA BROSGOL
I had the honor of coloring this wonderful, coming-of-age, YA graphic novel by one of my favorite cartoonists, Vera Brosgol. It was a fun challenge depicting a variety of different types of lighting with a very limited palette of only four colors (black, white, green, dark green). Published by FirstSecond Books in 2018.
THE UNSINKABLE WALKER BEAN (SERIES) BY AARON RENIER
I colored The Unsinkable Walker Bean and the Knights of the Waxing Moon (2018) and The Unsinkable Walker Bean (2010) both by one of the most talented cartoonists I know, Aaron Renier. Both these rip-roaring, high-seas adventures feature lavishly detailed panels that kids love to dig through. Published by FirstSecond Books.
AN ANACONDA ATE MY HOMEWORK!
BY ALICE SHERTLE, ILLUSTRATED BY AARON RENIER
BY ALICE SHERTLE, ILLUSTRATED BY AARON RENIER
My very first coloring job was this picture book illustrated by my friend Aaron Renier. It served as a 32-page "dry run" for the much larger undertaking of coloring his graphic novel The Unsinkable Walker Bean (see above). An Anaconda Ate My Homework! was published in 2009 by Disney Hyperion.
